Papers, 1860-1908.

Letters and papers of a Confederate general who later became a Protestant Episcopal clergyman and eventually Episcopal Bishop of South Carolina. Primarily letters to his wife written during the war, describing army life, including the surrender of Fort Sumter, the defense of Charleston, 1863, the Chattanooga campaign, 1863, and the Atlanta campaign, 1864, and religion. Several postwar letters deal with the Atlanta and Chattanooga campaigns. There are also a few maps or sketches of troop movements, and a brief diary, August-December, 1861. Most of the postwar letters deal with ecclesiastical affairs.
